Centerpieces!
Wishing Tree
Wishing Trees have been a part of many different cultures around the world to celebrate many different things. The Wishing Tree is a Dutch wedding custom where guests are given a piece of paper, either shaped like a leaf or made of card stock; guests write their wishes to the bride and groom and then hang the paper on the tree. In Scotland, people pounded coins into the trunks of trees for each wish they wanted granted (including a visiting Queen Victoria!). In China, wishes were written on paper which was then tied to an orange and thrown up into a tree - if the paper successfully hung on one of the branches, the wish would come true!
The Winterfest Committee will be setting up our own Wishing Tree at the Botanical Gardens. There will be special paper available to make wishes for the library and for more personal wishes. You won't have to identify yourself! Just print out your wish and add it to one of the branches of our tree. It can be funny, sweet, sad, hopeful - or just thanks for making it through another year! After the event, wishes will be placed in a scrapbook and scanned for posting to the Winterfest blog.

Can I Bring My Child?
Lettie Haver, NRC
A: First off, we love your enthusiasm (and the flattery doesn't hurt).
The Committee decided this would be an adults-only shindig, so no one under the age of 16. There will be a cash bar for kids to stay away from, and we're borrowing the Library's karaoke and DDR machines which might be a temptation for little ones (but also might cause injury). Plus, we have not prepared any entertainment for kids. We won't ban them from the venue, but would prefer the wee ones stay at home for the evening.
How do I buy a ticket?
Alysen Wade, AMM
A: Tickets will go on sale November 1st. Each agency will have a person responsible for collecting money and distributing tickets.
So far, these are the people who will be representatives in different agencies:
Alex McQuade or Sarai Spears - Administration
Erin Smith - Art, Music, & Media
Donna Rondot - Dupont
Kay Spears - Genealogy
Becky Duwan - Georgetown
Carly Wiggins - Grabill
Lisa Bordner - NEIRRS
Linda Jeffrey - New Haven
Benita Browning - Pontiac
Jane Chronister - Storage
Genie Bishop - Woodburn
Mari Hardacre - Young Adults’
More will be added as we find out who they are! :)
What is the dress requirement?
Alysen Wade, AMM
A: There is no specific dress requirement. Some people like to dress up and some like to go casual. There will be someone there to take pictures, so if you'd like a more formal picture, you're welcome to dress up!
How much are tickets?
Cindy Hull, ITS
A: $5.00 per person in advance or $10.00 per person at the door. Tickets will go on sale November 1st.
May we bring a guest?
Cindy Hull, ITS
A: Yes! You may bring a significant other, a friend, a volunteer, a relative, or a stranger off the street - but everyone must buy an admission ticket! All party-goers must be 16 years of age or older. (And we would really prefer no strangers off the street.)

Q: What is the dress requirement? I read the word "gala" does this imply formal dress? are tickets will-call? who do we give money to?

Q: Hello Wonderful Winterfest Committee! Would like you to clarify about how kid-friendly Winterfest will be~ Could you do a blurb on the blog about library kids? Thank you!
